"This is a story about the love that holds us all together - it belongs to those who care for the survivor, as well as the survivor herself. Her attacker plays no part in it." Writer and survivor Hazel Grian
This new play set in South Bristol celebrates, with outstanding music and humour, the solidarity and strength that followed one of Bristol’s most shocking crimes.
When Lisa — alone and broke in Bedminster — survives a violent attack in her home, she is astonished to discover that she is loved. From 2010 to 2017 the story follows Lisa's amazing recovery, her discovery that she is part of a brilliant community, her battles with her own demons and with the failures of the justice system. Can she finally find her way to the light and will she and the good Samaritan who saved her ever meet again? The Music
Gorgeous music is at the centre of this show. The outstanding 'folk-electronica' score is composed by Sarah Anderson & Duncan Speakman, song lyrics by Hazel Grian.
The True Story
One night in 2010, alone at her home in Bristol, writer Hazel Grian was brutally attacked by an intruder and left for dead as the house burned. The attack became a national news story, leaving every woman who heard it saying, "It could have been me." Immediately the city of Bristol went above and beyond to help.Hazel, an established writer, performer and filmmaker (Portishead, The Simpsons, Star Trek, Aardman) wrote this musical play after interviewing many of the people involved in her care, including those in the NHS, Avon & Somerset Police, her friends and - eventually - her neighbours.
“I believe this project will help to show how all those involved drew comfort and strength from the collaborative approach to tackle a crime which shocked the local community.”
DC Paul Austins, Avon and Somerset Constabulary
